National Coming Out Day

National Coming Out Day, a project of the Human Rights Campaign, is today, October 11.

Coming out is a process, not a single event. I've learned this over and over again over the past 18 months. Even now, I am out to nearly everyone in my life but I still find myself often facing situations where I ask myself the question, "Should I tell?" Without a doubt, coming out was one of the best things I've ever done, for myself and, I believe, for those I love. If you're gay, no matter where you are in the process of coming out, to yourself or to others, let today be a day of reflection--and celebration!

I’m glad you wrote on his with more seriousness than I did, Chris :-). I’ve come to treat the day maybe a bit too flippantly.

Today on National Coming Out Day I had a funny moment with my assistant.

I was standing at her desk when my office phone rang. She picked up the line and answered for me. She put the call on hold, told me who it was, and I told her to tell the caller I'd call back in a few minutes. She picked up the line and said, "She's not available...er, he's not available at the moment. Can he call you back in a couple minutes?"

When she hung up she looked up at me and I was smirking at her. She was all sheepish and started laughing. I said, "Look, Heather, I'm all comfortable with myself now, but let's not go overboard."
